DIY: Easy Mason Jar Luminaries Craft
Have you ever gone to the craft store with a project in mind and had the entire thing just absolutely flop in your face? All I wanted to do was make some neat mood lighting out of mason jars, and I gotta tell you things were rough! I already had pint and half-pint jars on hand, but I went ahead and got a totally smooth quart mason jar from the hobby store.
DIY: Easy Mason Jar Luminaries Craft
My first idea was to do the whole Epsom salt luminary but without glue. I boiled the salt and water down and applied it to my jars just knowing it would crystallize beautifully and, well, it didn’t. Russell came home and went *sigh* “why are all of those mason jars dirty?” Yep, they just looked dirty. It was so disappointing and a full day of effort down the drain.
So then I was going to attempt a new way to tint the jars in different colors (you might remember I tinted them with Mod Podge and food coloring a while back and it was a smashing success). Things were going great and I was so stoked and then out of nowhere, while finishing curing in the oven, the paint starts to blister and pop. Seriously?
I was just about sick of the whole project and since I have a tendency to walk off in the store found myself alone and unable to find my shopping accomplice. The only thing to do in this situation is to have the person paged with something like “Mr. B, your mistress is waiting at the customer service counter” OR go peruse the clearance aisle or another aisle that gets a large number of sighs and groans that keep you from it on a normal shopping trip.
And that is when I found these awesome little glass gems for 50 cents a bag. I snapped them up knowing that I was going to put these guys on my glass jars, fingers crossed that it would work out well. And guess what? In the end, I’ve got some gorgeous faceted jars that shimmer and shine or make pretty light patterns around them. It is wonderful!
Supplies for Mason Jar Luminaries
- glass gems
- hot glue gun
- mason jars
- tea light candles or battery operated tea light candles
- solar jar lids
How to Make Mason Jar Luminaries
Hot glue your gems to the glass…
Covering it as fully as possible.
Add your tea lights (battery operated or actual flame). You can leave the lid off, put it back on (if battery operated), or use just the lid without the seal if real flame.
My battery lights weren’t powerful enough to cast much of a glow, but the flickers underneath the glass were gorgeous. Great for interior lighting.
But you also have the option of making these mason jar solar light lids from the tutorial at Garden Therapy. This tutorial is seriously sooo easy – and each one costs you about $0.97 rather than the $12 it costs to purchase a mason jar solar lid!
These are great for outdoor lanterns and that’s how these will be used. The extra weight from the stones makes them heavy enough that I don’t worry too much about easily getting blown over by the wind and shattering. Oh, and the darker it is, the prettier both versions are but it’s totally impossible to get a good picture that way!
This may go down as the easiest DIY ever on Mom Sparks (though not the least time-consuming considering all of my personal craft fails)! Which do you prefer? The soft gold flicker or the bright blue stunner?

Just Pinned this because it looks so classy and easy to do…I”d love to do this craft.
You rock, thanks!
Yes. Nice. But the glass pieces come off easily..I put them outside on my step & they gradually fall off. Need a stronger glue, not a hot glue gun!
I’m curious why you would need the solar lid? Would it be possible just to use the regular lid with a real candle? I think these are very pretty and would like to make some.
So that there is proper air flow for the flame, it is possible to use the outer rim of a regular lid but not the top seal portion and a real candle. I used solar lids because these will be sitting on a table on my porch and it makes more sense.
Love this idea!
Love the bright blue ones. Beautiful!
Love the effect on the walls when lit up!

LOVE – great for a summer evenings party.
Love you have added the clear glass “gems” to the jar, its looks so pretty when the jar is lit up 🙂
Thank you, Michelle. 🙂
I placed my glass light outside. As soon as it got warm, the gems fell off….now what? What did I do wrong? It there another compound to use besides the hot glue gun?
You can always use E-6000. That stuff won’t go anywhere!
Thank you….I was wondering the same thing about the hot glue…off to find some E-6000!
These would be pretty in my classroom, I can strategically place them to draw my students into areas I want them to linger in guiding them to a peaceful spot to work 🙂
I found that the hot glue begins to start melting after a while when using regular tea candles. will be trying Mod Podge soon.

Would modpodge hold these on? I would like to make this child friendly and I’m afraid the E-6000 glue would be too hard to get off of their fingers. They could easily paint the gems with mod-podge. If mod-podge works, would it re-soften when the candle made the jar hot? Thanks!
i was wondering what kind of hot glue or hot glue gun you used? I tried this for my moms birthday but after a few weeks the glass things started falling off.
Hi Allison!
I just found your post/project on Pinterest, and I’m glad that I did!!!
This looks like a GREAT project, cheap, and well, easy, albeit time consuming. LOL
My question is, couldn’t I use the “colored” glass gems and still get the same affect?
I’m trying to find something to make for my sister for Christmas, because she LOVES different colored lights in her room. She has hanging Christmas lights, 2 different lava lamps, and a rainbow changing light. I was thinking if I could make her a few of these jars, she wouldn’t need to have sooooo many lights on in her room. SAVE ENERGY!!!!
Thanks for a great project idea!
I’ve been looking for simple craft’s to do with my grand daughter. This is a good one to start with.
Thanks!
I love the blue stunner but what is a flicker, the light you used for the blue stunner?

i was thinking of putting the glass stones inside the jar with a battery operated tea-lights in the middle of the stones to see if that makes a difference also no glue would suit me
will the heat from being outdoors cause the gems to fall off?

I luv luv luv the Mason jars I’m going to make them for gifts thanks for a awesome idea
Did you leave yours outside full time? I did mine after seeing this on Pinterest but to my disappointment as soon as the sun hit them the hot glue reheated and the glass stones started falling off.

Try using E 6000 glue. It is awesome at bonding glass to glass.

I did this as instructed & the hot glue on the gems dried and left the glass gems cloudy. No more nice clear shine through the gems. Then when I got up the next morning I found that many of the glass gems had fallen off.
How were your jars before? Any prep? I could not get them to stay on for more than a few hours before falling off.

I’ve used the battery lights in small frosted glasses. It’s awesome with the flicker and my husband thought it was real.
Looking forward to trying this one. Thanks
such an amazing idea! i would love to try different colored gems to see the effect. they would look really pretty out on the patio or as a bathrm night light! I’m just not sure the reason for the solar lid if if using an electirc candle or reg.candle? very pretty-im excited to try this out! OH,thought i would share,on ebay are some low price led lights, some change color n they are controlled by a remote!

Simply the E-6000 will work but you can try to do a hot glue gun if you would be using a flameless t-light. I was wondering if it would be possible to use mod podge to glue the stones to the jar if you were using the flameless T-Light?
I used real tea lights and my stones started falling off. I used my glue gun to put the stones on.
Try gorilla superglue, it will be there forever!

Some friends and I are going to do these for a ladies craft night! We just need to know an estimate on how many bags of the glass gems we should get per jar? Do you remember approx. how many you used? It seems like stores carry 1lb, 2.5lbs and 5lb bags.
Where did you find the solar lids?
You can get them on Amazon!
Great Ideas in recycling empty bottles. Thanks
Thanks!
I just made one of these last night as a gift for my Mom’s 82 birthday party today. I followed all steps and used a battery tea light (no candles in the assisted living place).
However, a few of the pieces did fall off over night. Will try one of the glues mentioned in some of the posts.
Thanks for the great idea!
Hi. I love the mason jars with the glass beads I have tried the hot glue gun and at least 10 of them fall off. I have tried about 4 different glues. Tbey didn’t work. Would you please help me figure out what I am doing wrong and how to fix it. Thanks so much I would really appreciate it.
I would try a glass bead glue!
I made 24 of these luminaries for all my guests at a party I host. I wanted the stones to be permanent and washable so I used E6000. They turned out so cool but what a pain in the butt. It takes a very long time to wait for the E6000 to dry….but I DID IT!
Sounds like it was a beautiful party! Work the wait, I hope. 🙂
Have you tried a silicone glue? Glue that is specifically for glass?
My gems fell off first night using hot glue gun. How do you keep them on?
I like the blue ones! I did something similar for my 38-anniversary party; using glass beads at the bottom of a ten-inch vase and applied a strand of rhinestoned ribbon. Then I took a heart-shaped candy dish, inverted it, and placed a tea lamp under the dish. I placed the combination on 12-inch square mirrors, topping each vase with a small bunch of flowers. The mirrors made the arrangements look larger and brighter.
oooo, love that idea!
