DIY: Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint
My kiddos spend the majority of their summer splashing in any and every form of water they can find but on days that I put my foot down and deem it too chilly to swim (which happens more than you think in MN) I am desperate to find another activity that helps pass the time.
Enter our new favorite summer go-to fun activity that has all the neighbor’s kids flocking to our driveway:
Sidewalk Chalk Paint!
It is simple. So simple. And if you feel like turning it into a fun summer lesson that is easy too.
What you need:
Water. Cornstarch. Food Coloring. Tupperware. Measuring Cup. Paintbrushes
Recipe:
Equal parts water & Cornstarch (I used 1/4 cup of each- I go slightly heavier on the cornstarch)
stir together. it will thicken quickly but it will mix together.
Then the fun part. Start adding food coloring. This is where, if you are feeling like a superstar mom, you can turn it into a lesson about color mixing. My boys were so excited to see what happened when they mixed all the different colors together. They had a blast making all the colors of the rainbow (and they learned all the colors of the rainbow!)
After the colors are mixed you are ready to paint! You will need to stir the “paint” occasionally to keep it from settling.
My 16oz box of cornstarch made 12 different “paints.”
The kids loved it.
Then it rained and we got to start all over again.

It looks like your boys had a blast! We tried sidewalk paint a few weeks ago and my youngest (2 yo) spilled most of the paint…it still dried cool but I will definitely try this again when they’re older 🙂

Made this today for my boys. So cool! It’s smooth and almost glossy when it dries. I did 1c cornstarch and 1c water.

I also found a unique website that offers personalized portraits for babies and children. They saved us when we missed our photoshoot due to the pandemic. Try them out!
