Easy Dutch Apple Pie with Crumb Topping Recipe
This delicious Dutch Apple Pie is made with a homemade pie crust, apples,, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a tasty crumb topping!
A Step Up from a Traditional Apple Pie
Today I have an amazing recipe for a delicious Dutch Apple Pie with Crumb Topping. It just may be the perfect apple pie.
Made with a homemade pie crust (or ready-made crust), apple filling, lemon juice, sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg! A step up from a traditional apple pie, though there is nothing better than baked apples and a flaky pie crust am I right?
The golden delicious crumb on the top of this homemade apple crumble pie makes all the difference. Serve however you prefer, warm with ice cream or whipped cream, or maybe chilled from the fridge.
In my opinion, this is the best apple pie I have come across and I owe it to the streusel topping. I have a feeling you’ll never go back to a regular apple pie again after giving this apple crumb pie a try and getting rave reviews!

Ingredients Needed for Dutch Apple Pie
For the apple pie filling and bottom crust:
Homemade Pie Dough Crust or Ready-Made Pie Crust: You can either make your own pie crust from scratch or buy a pre-made one from the store.
Sliced Apples (Cooking Apples or Tart Apples): Choose apples that are a little sour, like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. They add a nice contrast to the sweetness.
Lemon Juice: This is a tangy liquid from lemons that keeps the apples from browning and adds a hint of citrusy flavor.
Sugar: This is a sweet, granulated substance that makes the filling sweet and delicious.
Brown Sugar: A sweetener with a rich, caramel-like taste, often used in baking.
Flour: A powdery ingredient that helps thicken the pie filling, making it less runny.
Cinnamon: A warm and aromatic spice that gives a cozy flavor to the filling.
Nutmeg: A fragrant spice that adds a gentle, nutty taste, complementing the other flavors in the pie.
For the top crust:
Flour: This is a powdery ingredient used to create a dough that covers the pie.
Sugar: A sweet, granulated substance that adds sweetness to the crust.
Brown Sugar: A sweetener with a rich, caramel-like taste, used to give the crust a delightful flavor.
Butter or Margarine: A creamy, fatty ingredient that adds richness and helps create a flaky, golden-brown crust. You can use either butter or margarine for this recipe.

Do you pre bake the pie crust before adding the filling?
Nope!
Made my first apple pie today and this was it! Turned our perfect! Thanks so much for the awesome recipe
Yay! So very happy to hear it!
I made this Tuesday and it’s great! I doubled the amount of topping because it seemed a little sparse on top..maybe I have a larger pie dish…who knows. Other than that I followed the recipe. Oh and I used granny smith apples 🙂
This makes me so happy!
I made this pie for my Sister and she loved it! She said best pie ever!!
I used 1/2 granny Smith and 1/2 honey crisp!!
I will definitely make it again!
Wonderful!! Looked for topping without oats, this is delicious!! Thank you.
My pie tasted great except it was runny. Did I not cook it long enough or what?
This is a great recipe! I’ve made it twice and it’s tasty for sure
That makes me so happy! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Oh My Word!!! This is the best Dutch Apple pie I have ever made. I used Honeycrisp apples. I didn’t have nutmeg so just left it out & still… Oh My Word!
Yay! This makes me so happy. 🙂
I have never made a pie before! And it turned out amazing! I made it gluten free, dairy free with gluten free flour and pre-made gluten free crust and dairy free butter! And everything turned out amazing (which is always hard to do when cooking GF/DF) thank you for the recipe!
This makes me so happy! Also good to know that it works with GF flour!

I made this pie and it was so delicious and so easy that I have used this recipe several times over this holiday season .
I am so happy to hear that! Yay!
Very good and not to soupy inside like others I’ve tried. The only thing different I added cinnamon to the crumb topping. Otherwise I followed the recipe and used a premade 9″ deep dish pie crust. Yummy!!
This was so easy and turned out so good! Needs a little more butter in the crumble, though. Mine was a little dry so it didn’t get those nice crumble chunks.
Yummy! I googled how many apples I’d need. 8 apples for 6 cups, so I used 7. Way too many. It was domed high. But tasted great!
Fabulous!
My comment is about your website. I couldn’t get this page to stay up on my mobile phone. The page kept refreshing itself every few second. So about the time I was able to find my way to the recipe the page the page would refresh, then take me back to the top of the page. PLEASE consider your viewer’s experience on a smaller device when agreeing to SO MANY ADS & VIDEOS. It was so maddening I final gave up & moved to my desk computer, which defeats the point of being able to use a mobile device. I even had issues trying to type this comment. Every time a new ad popped up the cursor in the comment box jumped around. 🙁
If you hit print recipe it should open just the recipe in a new tab without any distraction 🙂

Tried this recipe today, with pre-made pie crust ( just so quick and convenient) also added an egg wash to the crust before filling, as it keeps the bottom layer from getting soggy later- added a 1/4 cup of flour, used vietnamese cinnamon from penskeys and doubled the crumb topping- It is a wonderful recipe , can’t wait to cut into it!! YUM! Alsos the left over topping goes great on hot oatmeal!
Could this pie be frozen?
Absolutely!
I’ve never made a pie before and tried this last night- seemed too simple. OMG it’s so good- tastes like something from a restaurant. I used 4 granny smith apples and they were perfect, nice tart flavor to balance the sugar. I was worried about it being too liquidy inside but not at all, just perfect. thanks
Oh I also added a few spoonfuls of caramel to the apples before putting the topping on
This Dutch apple pie is the absolute BEST we’ve ever had!!! Thank you for sharing!
Yay! So glad you liked it!
Hi! I want to make this for thanksgiving. Would it be possible to make the day before? If so, how would you store it and would it be possible to reheat the day of? This sounds and looks amazing! Thank you 🙂
I think you could refrigerate it, covered, then heat up in the oven the next day!
First time making apple pie and I used this recipe because of how easy it looked. It turned out great! I didn’t have a measuring cup (cooked it at my boyfriend’s new place a day after he moved and he hasn’t unpacked yet) so I just threw in enough apples to fill the pie dish. I was worried about doing a crumb topping but it came together well and is so tasty. No need to hunt for another recipe, this one is amazing in how great it tastes and how easy it is!
Yay! This makes me so happy!
This Dutch Apple pie is so yummy! Very easy to put together. Followed the instructions and it came out of the oven a five star! This is our go to pie recipe!
this will be my Thanksgiving pie.
Awesome!
Delicious! Substitutes I made due to Gluten and Dairy allergies in my home: Made with Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour and vegan butter. I also used half granulated sugar and half coconut sugar. Used granny smith and honey crisp. Turned out SO GOOD!
I’m so happy to hear that!
Made this and my husband said it was the best apple pie I have made, in the 50 years we been married. Very easy recipe, will be making this apple pie often.
